Wood lantern is a meditative practice that provides a break from the busy, screen-focused lives many of us lead. In this course, you will learn to build Japanese Wood Lantern from precious timber. Our expert tutors will teach you how to correctly use hand woodworking tools and build the lantern by the traditional method.
Enjoy building the lantern using an easy to follow step-by-step guide. Students will also gain a more intimate understanding of timber as a material, how to work with it and how the traditional wood structure works. Join us in this creative course and leave with your own beautiful creation!

Knowledge Required

This workshop is aimed at people with no experience with woodwork. It is open to anyone 18 years and over.

The course is run using entirely hand tools so you need to be aware that there is an element of physicality involved.





What you'll get from this course

By the end of this woodwork course, you should have:
Completed one Japanese wood lantern
Learned to use a variety of hand tools
Gained an understanding of timber as a material and resource.
Learned the traditional woodworking method.

What to bring

You are encouraged to bring your own facemask.
You are required to wear closed-toe shoes.
Please wear clothing that can get dirty (e.g. sawdust will be present).
Long hair needs to be tied back and no loose hanging jewellery should be worn.
